Certified Death Certificate
A certified death certificate may be ordered through the funeral home selected by the family of the deceased or by contacting the appropriate office below
- For death occurring in Sacramento County within the past 60 days, a death certificate may be ordered online from the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services Vital Statistics Unit or call (916) 875-5345
- After 60 days, a death certificate for death occurring in Sacramento County may be ordered online from the Sacramento County Clerk-Recorder’s Office or call (916) 874-6334.
- After 90 days, certificates for deaths occurring anywhere in California may be obtained by mail from the California Department of Health Services, Office of Vital Records or call (916) 445-2684.
Coroner's report (investigator's final report)

To order a Coroner’s Report, contact the Coroner's Office Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at (916) 874-9320. Copies are available after the report has been completed.

Indigent Cremation
Families may find themselves financially unable to cover costs related to the final disposition of their loved one. Sacramento County offers cremation for individuals with little or no income or resources. To qualify, both the decedent and the person legally responsible for the disposition of the remains must be indigent.
