Coroner Training

Spring 2008 Coroner Basic Academy - Module A

The 80 hour Basic Death Investigation Course has been divided into two Modules A & B, both 40 hour courses. Students may register with the Sacramento County Coroners’ Office or Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Coroner Division for Module A. In every case the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Coroner’s Division will facilitate Module B. Please note that both agencies can only accommodate 20 students at a time and will be conducting the courses one week apart. Also note that both modules are required for death investigators who fall under Penal Code section 830.35(C). Death investigators who fall within Penal Code section 830.1 are strongly encouraged to take Module A; however, California P.O.S.T does not require its completion. All death investigators, regardless of their penal code classification are required to complete Module B and Orange County can accommodate up to 40 students.  Successful completion of Module A by students under section 830.35(C) is required in order to attend Module B which will be held approximately one month later at the California Coroner Training Center in Orange County. In every case a confirmation number will be required to register for both modules. Students are required to complete a Student Prerequisite Worksheet along with reading the National Guidelines - "Death Investigation: A Guide for the Scene Investigator" and "Duties & Responsibilities of Coroner and Related Laws".

The requirement of the Coroner’s Death Investigation Course shall only apply to peace officer coroners hired on or after the agency enters the California P.O.S.T. program. It should be noted that satisfactory completion of the POST-certified Coroner’s Death Investigation Course is required within 12 months of the investigator’s date of appointment.
