Reports, Death Certificates and Fees

Certified Death Certificate

A certified death certificate may be ordered through the funeral home selected by the family of the deceased or by contacting the appropriate office below.

Coroner's Report (Investigator's final report)​

  • First copy to next-of-kin  No charge
  • Case within last three years  $11
  • Case older than three years  $97

To order a Coroner’s Report, contact the Coroner's Office Monday through Friday between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at (916) 874-9320. Copies are available after the report has been completed.

Autopsy Report (Detailed autopsy examination report)

  • Case within last three years  $11
  • Case older than three years  $97

Autopsy & Pathology Support Services

Body Storage

  • 72 hours after notification to the next of kin that remains are released for disposition  $15/day

Body Release

  • Regular business hours*  No charge
  • After hours** (with approval)  $38

*Monday – Friday 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

*Weekends and Holidays 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

**Monday – Friday  8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or after 5:30 p.m.

Body Transport

  • (Within Sacramento County only)  $400.00

Vehicle Storage

  • Vehicle Storage  $10.00 per day

Indigent Cremation​

Families may find themselves financially unable to cover costs related to the final disposition of their loved one. Sacramento County offers cremation for individuals with little or no income or resources. To qualify, both the decedent and the person legally responsible for the disposition of the remains must be indigent.
